Estranged within moments by Shristi Nangalia

18:00
Summer vacation had always been my favourite part of the year, just like many other Indian kids! Maa, papa, bhaiya and I made sure we travel a lot and meet other members of our extended family. Visiting our old family home, visiting nana-nani’s place, hanging out with cousins, sleeping until noon and non-stop eating! Even maa and papa did not follow the ‘you have to bath everyday’ rule!
Well, all of this decreased as we grew up. My grandparents perished one by one and everyone else started fighting for the little land and money that they had left behind. Family became foe and cousins became awkward strangers. We four were left with a forsaken vacation thereafter.
We are all grown up now and these memories have started fading. It was 6 years ago that bhaiya got hired by a construction firm in Dubai. About 2 years later, I got a handsome job in Doha as an art instructor. I was allowed to live out of the country only because bhaiya lived nearby. Maa and papa wanted to continue staying in India. Bhaiya always travelled overnight to my place on festivals and holidays even for a day to make sure I don’t get stranded alone on happy days. We celebrated holidays by roaming about the city, shopping for each other and eating junk for dinner.
During his foremost year in Dubai, bhaiya gifted maa and papa a trip to UAE with his first salary during the summer vacation. I joined them too and we had the time of our lives- reliving old memories and enjoying together like we did in India. Since then, it became a tradition. Every summer vacation, we picked a new spot in the Middle East and spent the most happening time of the year together.
This year was different... this year was special. We all planned to stay at my place and tour Doha. I had saved and bought a gold chain each for maa, papa and bhaiya. It was the first time that I was offering them something. I had also planned to introduce the love of my life to them, and ask them if I could marry him. But, things did not happen accordingly.
A few days before the arrival of maa, papa and bhaiya at Doha, I woke up to a shocking news. I could not digest what I saw on the TV. Many neighbouring countries including UAE had broken ties with Qatar. I did not care about the crisis, I did not care about the accusation made, and I did not care about its certainty... it was not the matter of concern for me then. I could only see a failing plan... a failing tradition.
I did not know how to react. I was angry and anxious at the same time. I wanted to run away from here. Papa sounded very scared on the phone and maa was crying. Bhaiya convinced them that the situation is nothing to be worried about. But then, we all were highly disappointed.
I could feel the nostalgia seeping in. Back in the past, relations got abandoned with the family, plans changed, people separated, amity died. I could see everything repeating.

For whatever reasons it may be, why making a connection and keeping the relation alive has to be so demanding? Why do most relations end up in a brawl? I had lost faith in humanity once again. No connection ever remains forever. Now, all that I could do is wait... and hope. At least, hope remains forever.

The fine line by Juhi Meshram

18:00

"From BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN TURNS REAL, INDIAN GIRL STUCKS IN PAKISTAN, to PAKISTAN IS A WELL OF DEATH; we have heard it all in this filmy case, but no one really cares about the real "BAJRANGI BHAIJAANS" here", a frustrated voice came from the couch. "They should have asked you",came another from kitchen. "This is a matter of great concern", this time Arun walked all the way to kitchen. "Yes but first eat you breakfast, then change the world", giggled Priya while she walked into bedroom.
Arun ate the breakfast while the news channel continued to show the news of the Pakistan returned Indian girl. "Arun, let’s leave if you are done its 9:30", Priya said while she picked the keys. "Yeah let's go", said Arun as he left the breakfast table. They locked the room and headed to their respective offices.
That night on the dinner table Priya served all his favourites. "Wow! Is it my birthday?” Arun said happily. "No! I was in a good mood.” an instant response came, "You were saying something about that Pakistan matter", Priya continued. "Yes just like that.", Arun said.
"Then who do you think is THE BHAIJAAN here?"
"So many"
"Must be our government right"
"No. Both the governments"
"Both? How is that? She fought for coming back"
"Yeah, but baby, she had crossed the border and now is here, this couldn't be possible without the corporations of their government"
"You are right but there was a lot going with ICJ in another case, may be that built up the pressure for them"
"there is no way you can deny the fact that she came back and with the help of both governments"
"That is not the point, what is important that she is back"
"But we cannot ignore the factors that brought her back"
"And we cannot avoid the thousand bad things that had happened because of them"
"One right can heal all the wrongs"
"Past cannot be healed and Why should we forget? What will we get out of it?"
"A friendship"
"Friendship? After partition, Kashmir attach, 1993 blast or after 26/11 ha?"
"Before future wars"

Pause. She had nothing to say but she did, "there's a lot that lies in between these soils that can't be wrapped"
"I think you already counted all the unwrapped, it's never too late to be friends"
"What will we get?"
"End of war"
"But she was tortured, men there torture they are bad, you are favouring people who don't respect our girls"
"Priya! It's not the country but the people, we have people like him in even in India"
"But they are Indians at least"
"Priya! Let’s cut the topic. We should sleep"
"Yeah! It's an endless discussion...hey! Don’t come to pick me tomorrow"
"Why?"
"I will go shopping with Maira, it's been long that we met and then we will meet an old friends group"
"Ohho and you are telling me now"
"Hey I just forgot.. I got her message now...."
"Relax baby, you go have fun and please inform me your whereabouts, just for safety"
"Yes mister I will be informing you all the time, good night and I love you"
"I love you too, good night"

Next day.

5pm
Priya: left the office. Off to mall with maira.<picture attached>
Arun: enjoy! Be safe.
8pm
Priya: bought you something marvellous, see when I get back.
Booked the cab for restaurant, going to meet some fiends.<location sent>
Arun: okay baby
10 pm
Priya:left for home
Arun: wating
11pm
Arun:not yet here? It's half an hour distance baby. Even in traffic.
11:30pm
Arun: Priya I have called you 78 times where you are, I reached the location you are not here. Of course.
00:00
Arun went here and there, searched all the possible places. Thoughts, worries, tears filled him thoroughly.
00:31am
Arun's mobile displayed, Priya calling...

After 3 hours...

Even the sound of keys made Priya move in shock as Arun unlocked the flat. They sat on the bed for another hour as Priya continued to stay quiet and hugged him as tight as she could. Arun started the conversation, "Priya I know you are frightened with this whole incident but do tell me what exactly happened." She finally broke down," I texted you when I left for home, Maria and I took different cabs obviously. After 15 minutes when we were away from the square, two drunken boys waved our taxi to stop. When the driver did not stop they followed us with their bike. I could have called you then, right! Shit! It did not click. Then they stopped in front and took out the cab driver and then snatched me out. They looted all my bags and jewellery. I thought that was the end. But then they started touching me. The driver had already escaped, they looked at me with those weird smile and they were coming closer,,, they touched my ... my neck then my Breast ,, then they went down to touch....", Arun interrupted in between,"hey Priya you don't need to recall all that.. Relax... Take a breath... now tell me how you escaped", Arun caressed her.

After a while Priya continued," when they stopped before us and were dealing with the driver, luckily it had clicked me and I dialled 100, when they had snatched me I dropped my phone in the cab, the police must had heard the sounds as I uttered HELP a thousand times. When they were assaulting me, police came and the two drunk men,, they escaped. I called you once we reached the police station and you know the rest." "Hmm, you are brave Priya, it’s your presence of mind that saved you. And don't worry police officers will find those bastards", Arun consoled her. "I hope they catch them, they were piece of devils, not humans for sure", Priya said.

To break the moment Arun said, "Now let’s sleep, we are not going anywhere tomorrow, we will take a break from the world and I will cook for you.. Okay?" "Deal", Priya smiled for the first time after all this.
Arun switched off the light.

The frightening night seemed to end as Priya switched on the lights again. Arun got up in fear, "Priya, all okay? Is that matter still disturbing you?? Tell me..." This time Priya interrupted him," I was just thinking that you were right." "Hain??", Arun had no clue what she was saying. "About that matter that is going, that girl who returned from Pakistan, that Indian girl", Priya tried to recall. "Priya... where did it come from you don't think about all this, let's sleep", Arun thought her to be just disturbed. "No Arun, it has to come, i just realised" "Realised? What?" "That I was wrong, it wasn't Pakistan but that man who was responsible for her plight", Priya said. "Good that you realised now let’s sleep", Arun dismissed. "Yes let’s sleep, we were one, we divide it into two and now we are making the countries hell to live in, it’s us, we human, not the country",Priya concluded.

Love, That I Lost to Hate by Shristi Nangalia

17:00

“Tea?” I asked, like every other day when he is back from the office.
“Ah! Sure. Today was again a stressful day. But you know, I figured out something really important today.” he was smiling.
“What is it?” I smiled back.
“Hehe, it relates to the research I am working on.  I was going a little off-track. But, today I fixed it. It was so obvious that I felt sheepish later. But, you see? It was all for the good.” It seemed as if he was talking in his sleep, as if he was in his own dreamland. I loved this thing of his. I couldn’t stop smiling.
And “That’s so good, Suru.” is all I could say.
“Yeah. I have to go back and continue even today.” Suru said.
“You have been doing this often lately. I just want you to take care.”
“Yeah, I know. I want to finish this soon and correctly. Ajay have been helping me constantly. We are good.”
“You don’t look good with dark circles.” I complained, only to keep the conversation going.
“I am dark already. And we are in the United States. Nobody can tell if I have dark circles. Haha!” the optimist joked.
“Don’t say that. You are the brightest thing in my life.”
“Aww... and you are mine.”
 “Come back soon, Suru.”
“Of course! Thanks for the tea, Soni. I will see you tomorrow morning then.” he was all set to leave for the office again.
“Hmm... I will miss you.” I meant it.
“Aww.... No, you wouldn’t miss me. Because, you would be having a super tight sleep now. You too are working and you get tired, don’t you?” his eyes were in mine.
How does he always manage to make things sound so right?
“Yes... I do...”
“Good. Now, go sleep like a baby. Take care.” He gave a quick kiss on my forehead and went past the main door. I locked it and went to bed obediently.
----------------------
I woke up to see his sleeping and almost smiling face next to me. I checked my phone, got freshened up and went into the kitchen following the daily routine.
“Good morning, Soni.” said a deeper voice of Suru from a distance.
“Good morning. All well?”
“Yes. I had a lovely sleep. So did you. I came back around 3, took a bath and slept beside you. You did not have a hint.”
“Oh! I am so sorry....” I felt guilty.
“Hey, I am kidding. Even, I did not want to wake you up. Now, take the sorry back.” He said.
“Okay... I take it back. Wait on the table, I will bring your tea and the newspaper is on the console.”
“Thank you.”
I woke up at the same time each day but a few days, I don’t know why, I run late. Like, today.
“Can you help me pack the lunch?”
“Noooo... I can’t.”
“What do you always do this, Suru? Why can’t you?”
“Soni.... If I pack my lunch, I would know what I would eat later on. But if you pack it, I will have that surprise element.” He had his excuses.
I waited a bit to digest what he had just said. But then, I couldn’t control my laughter.
“Hahaha! You talk like a comedian.” I said.
He had his funny child-like face on.
“When we will be having a baby, he is sure going to look like you. Exactly this face of yours!”
“No, I would want him or her to look like you.” He said checking his phone.
“We will see.”
“My Whatapp friend’s group is full of messages. Ritvik is getting married, finally!”
“Ritvik from Mumbai?”
“Yes. He is inviting us.”
“Oh, let’s try and take a few days break then. Our long-thought India trip is yet to happen. Maa will be very happy too.”
“You are right. Let me see if I can get a leave.”
“Okay then. I am going to get ready. I am running late. Here, your lunch box.” I handed him the box.
“Anna datha suhkhi bhava!” he said, raising his arm.
He said this phrase every time he is elated with someone’s offering food to him. It sometimes feels so good to listen to our regional languages while living in the States. Detached, yet still very rooted. That is how Suru is. I always asked him if he misses his country or wants to go back because I knew he was one true and loyal citizen. But he was an optimist. He believed if we can live here happily, we should continue to live here... happily. He believed that unless we are good to others, others will be good to us.
----------------------
Later when I was at my office, I received his text-
Going to the grill and bar with Ajay in the evening. See you straight at dinner.
Little did I know- that this was going to be a lie; that he was not going to see me at dinner that night; that he was not going to see me ever. He never returned. They say he was shot. An overactive ‘fairer’ man misunderstood him due to his colour. At first, it felt like I would go and take away his life. But then, what difference would this make? This wouldn’t bring back my Suru. And Suru would not suggest me to do this... if he was alive.
I did not realise, that I never thought how life would be without Suru. That is why I stay clueless even now... about what actually will happen with me. What made the guy shoot and kill another guy? Hate? Hate for a skin colour, for an entire race? Or was it intolerance? Does it have to do anything with co-existence? Why couldn’t he just live with the hate? How does this hate empower us to the limit that we loose our senses? What did he get out of this? He is going to sleep alone in an empty grey cell for the rest of his life. What a reward he got... for spreading hate.
But the hate remains... in every one of us. Millions of examples lie in front of us. They just lie- dead. Somebody pick them up! Somebody give them a meaning! Somebody show how powerful its antonym, love, is!

Sparking the Fire by Juhi Meshram

18:00

My father is a religious person. He believes that mukti yatra cuts down the impurities and cleanses the soul.  He always wanted to do this yatra through which he gets to visit lots of mosques and dargahs. His 60th birthday was approaching. December is a cold month. So, I decided to take him on this yatra myself. It was supposed to be memorable, and ultimately it was.
I planned a 12-day trip over 3 states of the North, covering 16 of the important religious sites. Abbu’s birthday was right in the middle of the trip- on the 6th day. We left home with a bag full of anticipation and good hope. The first 5 days went exactly as I planned, but not Abbu’s birthday.
On his birthday, we were to explore the city which had a great importance in the Hindu mythology. We thought of taking the essence of a sister religion and some extra blessings from the Hindu Gods too. There was a 16th-century mosque that Abbu wished to visit. We reached the place early in the morning. Abbu said he would sleep sometime before going to the mosque in the afternoon. I tried sleeping too but a weird feeling kept me up. I went down for some tea. There was a small stall which served tea, coffee and snacks. There were three people other having tea there. I asked for a cup and sat on the bench.
“Munna ka tabiyat bigad gaya, nahi to hum jarur jaate.” said the slim guy wearing a kurta.
“Abhi bhi time hai, aap ja sakte hain. Program 3-4 baje se pehle khatam nahi hoga.” Said the chai-wala.
“12 baj gaye hain, ab jaane ka mann nahi.” The slim guy replied.
I was keenly listening to what they were saying. I started getting interested upon hearing the word ‘program’.
“Muaf kijiyega, kis program ki baat ho rahi hai?” I asked.
“Aap kahan gum hain, bhai- sahab? Itni badi rally nikli hai aur aapko nahi maalum? Kal ki ghoshna nahi suni aapne?” the other guy in a kurta asked back.
“Ji, mai aaj hi aya hun. Yatra par hu Abbu ke sath. Masjid jaane ka iraada hai kuch der me.” I clarified.
There was a sudden silence amongst us. The two guys in kurta looked at each other and then looked away. They had finished their tea.
“Chal chotu, hum chalte hain.” the other one said and they both walked away whispering.
“Aaj masjid jana aapke liye theek nahi.” said the chai-wala.
“Kyu, bhai?” I was getting anxious.
“Yeh masjid vivaad me phasa hua hai.”
“Itna to hume pata hai, bhai. Par log to aaj bhi jaate hain na wahan?” I wanted answers.
“Haan, Magar aaj ki rally wahin ho rahi hai, aur aadhikarik raay iss masjid ke khilaaf jate hain. Aakhir hai to yeh sheher ek Hindu dharm sthal.” The chai-wala’s words were making no sense to me.
“Kya isse ye maalum hota hai ye yahan masjid ka hona galat hai?” i asked.
“Hamare kehne ya sochne se kya hota hai? Hai to raaj satta ka.”
“Satta? Kya yahan ki satta sabke liye baraabar nahi?” I was confused.
He jolted his head and looked away. His silence was making me uncomfortable. I wanted to see the rally. I wanted to see the mosque.
“Masjid ka raasta kis taraf hai?”
.......................................................
Crowd, a disturbed crowd was all I could see in front of my eyes. I kept on walking. I could hear them chanting. Those chants were piercing through my body like little needles. I could sense instability. I could sense insanity. I went closer. I could now hear the bhaashan that the politician was giving.
“Iss bhoomi ko hame samtal banana hoga, baithne layak banana hoga. Taki yahan samoohik kirtan ho sake, bhajan ho sake. Yagya ka aayojan hoga....”
‘What is this man trying to say?’ I thought in my head. The mob kept cheering and chanting.
“Jai Shri Ram! Jai Shri Ram!”
When I went further and got the first sight of the mosque from a distance, I stood there perplexed. It was right in front of my eyes- the wrecking. The domes were being hit, the walls were attacked. It was hard for me to digest what I saw. The main dome fell... then another... Just then I saw something flying towards me and hit me.... I realized I was sitting on the ground, full of dust, when I came back to senses. The mosque was not standing anymore. My neck hurt, but it did not matter to me.
People had started returning to their homes. I returned too. On the way back to the hotel, I could not stop thinking about what had happened. They said it was essential, as it was an important Hindu site. The political leaders were smiling. The people were dancing in victory, chanting slogans and celebrating their win. Did they actually win? Who won? How can anyone justify the existence of a Hindu site? How does demolition of a religious building define their sanity? The security forces ran away. Further, there was no effort put to stop them. Why? My head was full of questions.
Abbu was awake and really worried when he did not find me in the room. He had already gathered the information about the demolition but my absence was a bigger concern for him then. When I reached, Abbu was watching the news on the TV with widened eyes. He ran to me and held me by my shoulders.
“Khairiyat hai?” he was shaking.
“Han Abbu, mai khairiyat hu, magar ye desh bahut beemar hai.” I replied.
He had tears in his eyes. I was broken. There was nothing that we could do.
“Chal, laut chalen.”  he said, still shaking.
.......................................................
It is February. About two months passed... and riots, commotion and deaths are all that we saw. Every other day we woke up with the death toll rising, new cities being engrossed and more hatred in the air. The fire had struck. Temples, mosques and other random buildings were targeted. We too were invited for a meeting to remove people of the other religion out of our locality. Ordinary people had turned into activists. People were dying. But, what could we do?
Whenever there is a state of disagreement, why is agitation and anger the first and the last option? Why do people think that destroying a monument of killing the people would solve or pacify an issue? Why does a positive ground, the religion, become the reason for the unending negativity? Why ‘co-existence’ is no more a word with a meaning? But, what could we do?
I suddenly felt like a culprit. I never thought anything beyond my family’s happiness. Who thinks about the country’s happiness? Who thinks about its integrity? Lots of our countrymen died, about 2000 of them. Are our countrymen, our extended family? If no, then why do we share the same land? If yes, then why are we still silent?
I decided, I would not sit silent anymore. I will do my part. I will propagate my questions, and I will derive the solutions. I will.

Sairat- Mad In Love by Juhi Meshram

18:00

Dear Son,

I stood gazing the bullet when entered the campus. Every time that I heard the bullet roar, a smile had conquered my face and that day even the bullet looked me back. My incentive heart popped out as the rider walked by my side & took her seat in the class. My eyes couldn’t stop staring her and that day even she didn’t take her eyes off me.

Love is to live, hate is to war
Love is to live, hate is to war
She pierced his eyes
And left him wounded like a cigar

Even the most pakau shayaris by my friend couldn’t lower our romance. I now knew she wasn’t an ordinary girl. How other stories in our village took place: Boy looked at girl and she blushed, boy stared girl and she complaint her friend, Boy followed girl to her home and she shied. But here! In our story: I looked at her and she asked me why, I sent letters to her and she started playing with me, her brother beat me and she warned him to not touch me. And that day, she stared me all the time in the class, not thinking about what others think, not caring about the professor and breaking all stereotypes that how a girl should be.
As it was not enough to stare me that she came all the way to my home driving her tractor. My stomach giggled as she asked me to meet near the fields, yeah! Indirectly but she did it. And my life changed, yes my 18 year old life changed as she proudly walked into it.

Love is to live, hate is to war
Love is to live, hate is to war
She has now entered your den
She will set us far

His worst shayaris continued as we came along. And I never realized what was the time that I had actually fall for her.

Your Father
Parshya
                                                      ___

Dear Son,

He was such a shy boy, and dumb too. It had been months that I knew he liked me. Thousands of time I hinted him that I too liked him. But! Blame his decency or innocence that I was ready for the leap and he was just walking behind me. Actually it wasn’t his fault, no one else could be as gutsy as me, and even my cousin brother couldn’t stand before me.

The time he gaped at me while I played kho-kho in the ground, the way he looked at me when we crossed ways in the campus. He feared me like others did but then there was a sense of owning when his eyes fell on me. May be I fall for that look.

Initially it was all a fun game for me; I liked to tease him when he sent letters to me, I liked to bully him in my way. I wanted to meet him more, talk to him and spend my time like that.

And that happened soon. I was not that person who could hold things for long or wait for the right time to appear. I chose my time and drove to his home.
That was the first day we directly met, talked and looked into each other. Those were the moments when I actually felt myself to be ordinary as I was not able to freeze time.

If he was the field I wanted to wrap it on me, if he was the pond, I so wanted to jump into it and if he himself was the time I wished to travel the time.
Our days became a routine as we me every day. The fields in our village witnessed our love and our friends became our armor as they cleared the way for us to meet.

Love is to live, hate is to war
Love is to live, hate is to war
You two are now together
Let us go to the bar

His friend started his weird rhyming. I wished I could teach him English.

Your Mother
Archi

                                                       ___

Never in life did I imagine something like that could happen to us. I blinked my eyes and everything that I had was gone. There was a grand party going on Archi’s home. We were all dancing and having fun when I saw a people fighting and soon we too were dragged in.

They beat us really bad. parshya, I and Pradeep were badly beaten by Archi's family. They had discovered Parshya nad Archi together. Our little heaven changed into hell.

Archi and Parshya ran away from village and got settled in city. Parshya’s mother and sister had to leave village in the fear of death. And our life too changed.

I wondered how they would be doing in that big city without us; they must be scratching their lives to survive. And one day I heard that they were killed by Archi’s brother. They had a son. I never got to see him.

Honour killing became their fate and I was left with my shayaris, they remined me of Parshya and our times.

Love is to live, hate is to war
Love is to live, hate is to war
Life stood broken
When war left scars

I know they must be missing me, the way I do. We had lived the best time together. And they were the best friends I had.

                                                     ___

Parshya- What happened to your nose?
Archi- I got this mark when we were killed. Why do you ask the same thing time and again? And you know it doesn’t hurt.
Parshya- And you know I love to irritate you. Are you happy? We are together at least.
Archi- Humans seem so small form here, and so is there plastic life. No one could ever set us apart.
Parshya- Yeah, I just feel we could nourish our son; we have got good neighbours though.
Archi- Yes! That is the only wish that never happened. All we can do is to pray for his well being.

Parshya- Yes! And we should soon find a way to send these letters to him telling him our love story. Still don’t know how to post letter from heaven.
